My Experience in Social Work

When I think about my work in social work, it’s really about one thing: helping people and communities live better lives. It’s not just a job; it’s a commitment to making things fairer for everyone.

What I Focus On

In my day-to-day work, I spend a lot of time on a few key things:

• Understanding Policies: I look at the rules and laws that affect people who are struggling. I try to understand if these policies are actually helping or if they are making things harder.

• Doing Research: I use solid methods to collect information. This helps me understand what’s really going on in a community so we can make better decisions.

• Planning Programs: I help design programs that actually meet the needs of the people we’re trying to serve. It’s not just about having an idea; it’s about making sure that idea works in the real world.

• Building Strong Organizations: I work on making the organizations that provide help stronger and more effective so they can support people better.

How I Teach

When I teach, my goal is to give students the tools they need to make a real difference. I believe they need to be able to:

• Think Critically: They must be able to look at a policy and ask, “Is this fair? Who does it help, and who does it hurt?”

• Do Good Research: They need to know how to find and use information to guide their work.

• Be Culturally Aware: They need to understand and respect people from all different backgrounds and experiences.

What I’m Curious About

There are a few areas I’m particularly passionate about researching:

• Understanding Policy Impact: I want to see how social policies really affect the lives of people in marginalized communities.

• Designing Better Programs: I’m interested in creating and testing programs to see what works best and how we can reach more people.

• Working With Communities: I believe research shouldn’t be done on people, but with them. Their voices and experiences are what matter most.

• Fighting for Fairness: I’m committed to promoting practices that make sure everyone has fair access to resources and services.

Helping Beyond My Own Work

I also try to give back to the profession in a few ways:

• Shaping Education: I help develop curriculums so we’re training the next generation of social workers well.

• Consulting: I work with nonprofits to give them advice on how to improve the services they offer.

• Mentoring: I love supporting students and new professionals as they start their careers.

Connecting Ideas to Action

What I find most rewarding is connecting what I learn in my research to what’s happening in the real world. For example, I use my findings to help organizations be more responsive to community needs, and I focus on strategies that truly improve the quality of life for people who are often overlooked or underserved.
